01 Service · Supported Independent Living

A home that's yours - with support that fits your life.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is help with the everyday tasks of living in your own home or a shared setting - personal care, meals, medication prompts, household routines and overnight support. We deliver SIL across Melbourne and Geelong, with workers matched to you locally - find your area. It's about building the skills and confidence to live the way you want - not fitting into someone else's routine.

What SIL funding actually covers

SIL funding is for the support you receive at home, not the home itself. Rent, board, utilities and household costs sit separately; SIL pays for the workers who help you live safely and independently in that home. If you are also looking at Specialist Disability Accommodation, our guide to SIL vs SDA explains the difference in plain language.

In an NDIS plan, SIL usually sits in your Core Supports budget. The key idea is a roster of care: a clear map of the times of day you need support, what workers are doing in those hours, and whether the support is one-to-one or shared. Shared arrangements can make funding go further because some worker hours are used by more than one person at once, while individual hours stay focused on your own personal care, routines or safety needs.

How an Ellira SIL arrangement gets built

We do not start with a vacancy and ask you to fit into it. We start by understanding what a typical week actually needs: mornings, meals, medication prompts, appointments, overnight support, housework, community time, and the quieter parts of the day when you may still need someone nearby. From there, we build a roster that makes sense for your plan and your life.

Worker matching matters because this is your home. We look for people with the right skills and the right style, then protect consistency wherever we can so you are not retelling your routine every week. In a shared house, we also pay attention to house dynamics: how people communicate, what shared spaces feel like, and how individual choice is respected. SIL can include the same practical living skills as daily-life support, but with the rhythm and reliability of a home-based roster.

Independence goals stay practical. You might start by cooking one meal with support, managing one part of your morning routine, or learning to speak up in a house meeting. We review those goals regularly, because support should adjust as your confidence, health and circumstances change.

Moving toward SIL from home or hospital

Moving into SIL can be a big step, especially if you are leaving the family home, hospital or another supported setting. Good transitions happen at your pace. That might mean visits before a move, gradual overnight trials, careful handover with people who know you well, and a plan for the first few weeks so the change does not feel like being dropped into the deep end.

We can coordinate with family, clinicians, discharge planners and existing providers, with your consent, so everyone is working from the same picture of what helps. If SIL is not yet funded in your plan, we can also help at no cost with the funding case: describing the support you need, gathering evidence, and explaining the roster clearly before you make a referral or speak with your support coordinator.

Think you might be eligible for SIL? We'll help you get there.

A strong application, built together

Already have a support coordinator and team? Our experienced coordinators work alongside them - complementing the work you're already doing, never taking it over. And if you don't have a team yet, we can help you build one, with providers you choose. Either way, we help gather the right evidence and put forward a clear, compelling case for SIL funding.

Help finding the right home

We partner with many Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) providers across Australia - so if you need somewhere to live, we can help you find a home that suits you and receive your Ellira SIL supports there.

Common questions

Things people ask us first

Which NDIS budget funds SIL?

SIL is usually funded from Core Supports and pays for support workers in your home, not rent, board, utilities or the home itself. The plan usually needs a clear roster of care that explains when support is needed and why.

Is SIL the same as accommodation or SDA?

No. SIL is the daily support in the home, while Specialist Disability Accommodation is the physical home for people who are eligible for that separate funding. Some people use SIL in an SDA home, and some use it in other living arrangements.

What if SIL is not in my plan yet, or my needs have changed?

We can talk through what evidence may be needed and how to describe your support needs clearly. If you already have a support coordinator or treating team, we can work alongside them rather than replacing their role.

Can I choose who comes into my home?

Yes. This is your home, so fit, boundaries and routine matter. We introduce workers properly, aim for consistency and review the match if it is not working.
