Community Participation & Access · Yarra Valley & Outer East

Community access in the valley and the hills.

In the outer east, community participation support is mostly a transport problem wearing another name. The activity you want to get to usually exists — it is just in Lilydale, Chirnside Park or Ringwood, and getting there without a car is somewhere between difficult and impossible.

Public transport thins out quickly past the Lilydale and Belgrave train lines. Bus services through the townships run infrequently and often not at the times an evening class, a support group or a shift actually runs. So the support here is practical: getting you there, being alongside if that helps, and getting you home.

We plan these trips to be worth taking. Grouping a few things into one outing beats four separate journeys, and it stretches funding that would otherwise disappear into travel.

Some of what people want is genuinely local — the Warburton trail, a Healesville market, a group at a neighbourhood house — and that is often the better place to start. Building something sustainable ten minutes away usually outlasts a weekly trip down the mountain.

Travel follows NDIS pricing rules and is always itemised on your invoice. We schedule workers to be in the area for the day rather than driving up for a single hour, which keeps travel costs down.

Self-managed and plan-managed plans welcome.

Common questions

Good to know

Can a worker drive me, or do I need my own transport?

Workers can transport you where that is part of your plan and the arrangement is set up properly. For a lot of people in the hills this is the support that makes everything else possible.

What if there is nothing local I want to go to?

Then part of the work is finding or building it. That might mean the bigger centres, an online community, or starting something small locally. We would rather ask what you actually want to do than hand you a list of activities.

How is travel charged?

Under NDIS pricing rules, itemised every time. Because we schedule workers in the area rather than sending them up for a single visit, valley travel costs are usually lower than people expect.
