Peer support is work done by someone who has their own lived experience of mental health challenges. Not a clinician, not a case manager — someone who has been somewhere similar and is further along the road.
In small towns that changes the shape of the conversation. There is less need to explain what it is like when everyone knows your business, or when the nearest group is an hour away, or when a bad stretch in July is partly the weather and partly everything else.
It also raises the stakes on privacy, and we take that seriously. What you share with your peer worker stays with your support team.
Group options in the valley are thinner than in the suburbs, so peer support here is more often one to one, with video groups as an option where you would rather not be the person everyone recognises in a room.
Peer work sits alongside clinical support rather than replacing it. If you have a psychologist or a treating team, a peer worker is an addition to that, not a substitute.

What does a peer worker actually do?
Whatever is useful and within scope — talking things through, being alongside for something difficult, sharing what worked for them, helping you get back to things that have slipped. It is practical, not therapy.
Is it confidential in a small town?
Yes. What you share with your support team stays with your support team, and we are conscious that anonymity is harder to come by here than in the suburbs.
Can I have peer support and see a psychologist?
Yes, and many people do. They do different jobs and work well together.
