Peer support across South East Melbourne.
Peer support is work done by someone with their own lived experience of mental health challenges. The value is not sympathy — it is that you can skip several steps of explanation and get to what actually helps.
It works well beside clinical support rather than instead of it. A psychologist and a peer worker are doing different jobs, and people often get more from having both than from either alone.
In the south-east there is enough density for group options as well as one-to-one work, which is not true everywhere we operate.
Groups run on interest rather than a fixed timetable, so it is worth telling us what you would actually turn up to. Peer groups, women's spaces and carer sessions have all come from people asking.
In a region this culturally diverse, being understood can mean language, faith or family expectations as much as diagnosis. That is worth naming at intake so we can match sensibly.
Self-managed and plan-managed plans welcome.
Good to know
What does a peer worker do that a support worker does not?
They bring their own experience of mental health challenges into the work. It is less about tasks and more about a conversation that starts from somewhere shared.
Are there groups, or is it one to one?
Both. One-to-one peer work is available now; groups run based on interest, so tell us what you would come to.
Is peer support instead of therapy?
No. It sits alongside clinical support and does a different job.
